Add Comment Question: I work in an accounting firm as an Accounting Technician/Bookkeeper. I do not hold a CPA designation, nor am I a CPA student. My firm requires that everyone works 50 hours a week for 3 months out of the year. As a single mother with 2 children, I am unable to work such hours. My question is, can I legally be fired for not making those billable hours? Answer: An employer can legally terminate any employee without cause as long as it provides the appropriate notice or pay in lieu of notice to the employee. However, based on the above scenario, we would suggest you call our office to speak with one of our lawyers with respect to your particular situation. If you have requested accommodation on the basis of your childcare obligations, and been denied, your employer may have additional obligations to assist and/or accommodate you.
