Add Comment Question: I was just fired from a job I held for 9 months. I was given my vacation pay, one week in lieu of pay and was told "it's just not working out". Would not give any other explanation. When saying goodbye to another employee they mentioned I didn't do anything wrong and that there is just not enough hours for a full time employee right now. It is a family run, small business, the one daughter went on maternity leave in August with NO plans to come back to work. My position was a permanent position. As I was leaving, the daughter was pulling in, and looks like she was coming back to work and I was let go. Shouldn't I have been laid off and not fired? Answer: An employer does always have the right to let an employee go, however they must pay the proper amount of severance. 1 week of pay in lieu of notice may not necessarily be enough, even as a 9-month employee.
