Hello, I was just laid off of my job March 24th, I went in to work expecting to cover my shift when my Manager and Employer asked to meet with me, I was than told I was losing my job, and would no longer be required to work there.
I have been working there for the past 7 months, way past my probation time. The reasoning for laying me off was due to lack of business, however I was the only employee being let go, from a 7 employee staff.
Was I wrongfully dismissed from my job? What would be my next steps?
Generally an employer has the ability to terminate you at any time, without even having to give you a reason why or advance notice, as long as you terminated on a without cause basis and paid adequate pay in lieu of notice. You have been terminated without cause, and as such, you are entitled to severance. Copied below is a link to our severance pay calculator which can provide you with an estimate of what you might be entitled to.
